Posted: 18-Aug-2009 12:12AM CDT

From the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet:

I-64 Project to Detour Traffic
FRANKFORT, Ky. (July 31, 2009) –The Interstate 64 twin bridges crossing KY 420 (Old Lawrenceburg Road) in Franklin County will undergo repairs beginning August 3rd. The project will involve maintenance repairs to the structural steel, expansion joints and bridge deck. Motorists may want to find alternate routes or adjust their plans during peak travel times.
As part of the project, one lane of traffic will be closed continuously during the bridge deck work. Other phases of work will be performed underneath the bridge with minimal disruption to motorists. The speed limit will be reduced to 55 MPH in the vicinity of the work zone.
The first phase of work will begin on Monday, August 3 with a lane closure on westbound I-64. Once the westbound construction is completed, the contractor will move to the eastbound lanes.
The average daily traffic count along this portion of I-64 is 41,700 vehicles; 19% of which is truck traffic. Vehicles wider than 12 feet will be required to detour during the project. The official detour route follows US-60 at exit 58, to KY-676 (the East-West Connector), to US-127, to the on-ramp of I-64 at exit 53 (and vice-versa).
Lane closures will not be allowed during certain times when traffic is heaviest. Days when lane closures are NOT allowed include:
I-64 Westbound:
- 12:00 p.m. Friday until 6:00 a.m. Saturday each week
I-64 Eastbound:
- 12:00 p.m. Sunday until 12:00 p.m. Monday each week
- 6:00 a.m. Friday until 6:00 a.m. Saturday each week
The contractor can be fined $10,000 per hour if both traffic lanes in the same direction remain closed for more than 10 minutes.
Mid-America Bridge Company was awarded the contract for this work in the amount of $688,453. Construction is to be completed by October 15, 2009.
The starting date and duration of inspection may be adjusted for inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Dial 511 or log on to 511.ky.gov [Outside Link] for the latest in traffic and travel information in the commonwealth of Kentucky.
