12th street in Covington is still on schedule to be widened beginning in 2007; however, there has been little movement on efforts to rename the street in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The current six year highway plan calls for right-of-way acquisition for the widening project to begin next year. Local NAACP leaders have called for the street to be renamed; however, opposition of local residents continues to be a problem. A city backed survey last year found that residents along the street overwhelmingly opposed the renaming.
