Median Cable Barriers Installed on I-65
Posted: 31-Aug-2012 1:19AM CDT

From Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Department of Highways District 4:

I-65 Safety Improvements Will Begin Next Week South Of Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (May 25, 2012) – Median cable barriers are being installed along a two-lane section of Interstate 65 from the Hart/LaRue County line extending north approximately six miles into Hardin County (MP 74 – MP 80).  Once this work is completed, continuous cross over crash prevention measures will be in place from the current three-lane widening project in Barren County to just south of Elizabethtown.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet awarded George B. Stone Company, LLC the project contract on April 27th of this year in the amount of $368,440.  Ninety percent of the contract amount is federally funded.

Work is expected to begin on Tuesday, allowing Memorial Day Weekend travelers to pass through the area without lane closures.  During the project, northbound and southbound inside shoulders will be closed.  Left (inside) lane closures will also be in place for both directions while contract crews pour concrete for the project.  Lane closures will only be allowed from 8pm Sunday through 11am Thursday.  All lanes will be open for weekend traffic, however shoulders will remain closed and workers may still be present.  Northbound and Southbound delays will be possible Monday through Wednesday during peak afternoon traffic hours.  Traffic updates are available at 511.ky.gov or from your phone by dialing 511.

Motorists are reminded that speed limits are reduced from 70 to 55mph through the work zone and double fines are in effect.

The project agreement specifies that to avoid penalties, the contractor must complete the median cable barrier installation by June 26th, 2012.

From Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Department of Highways District 1:

Governor Beshear announces plan to accelerate completion of new U.S. 60 Tennessee River Bridge at Ledbetter

Could be carrying traffic more than a year ahead of schedule

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 23, 2012) – Governor Steve Beshear today announced a plan to accelerate construction of the new U.S. 60 Tennessee River Bridge between Paducah and Ledbetter, enabling motorists to begin using it more than a year ahead of schedule.

“Travelers along U.S. 60, and especially the residents of McCracken and Livingston counties, are going to have a new ‘Ledbetter Bridge’ much earlier than expected,” Gov. Beshear said.

“We will cut a minimum of nine months off the estimated completion date of the project. But even better than that – we should be able to have two lanes of traffic on the new bridge by May 2013 – 14 months ahead of schedule,” Gov. Beshear said.

Under an agreement between the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the contractor, Kay & Kay/Haydon Bridge Joint Venture, the bridge contract is being converted from “working days” to a specified completion date.

Start of month-long bridge repair project on KY 1571 in Estill County delayed until Tuesday, Sept. 4
Posted: 30-Aug-2012 11:43PM CDT

From the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Department of Highways District 10 (Aug. 27, 2012):

Start of month-long bridge repair project on KY 1571 in Estill County delayed until Tuesday, Sept. 4

JACKSON, KY – The contractor responsible for a bridge repair project KY 1571 in Estill County has delayed the start of the work until Tuesday, Sept. 4. Once underway, the repairs will result in one-lane traffic and delays for motorists using this highway.

The project was originally scheduled to begin on Friday, Aug. 24.

During the project, temporary signals will control traffic at the bridge crossing Millers Creek near KY 52. These temporary signals will be in place for approximately 30 days as work on a bridge deck overlay project proceeds. This will affect traffic between Irvine/Ravenna and Beattyville, as well as travel from Lee and Owsley counties to Richmond.

While the work is ongoing, the route will be restricted to vehicles less than 12 feet wide. Vehicles wider than 12 feet will need to find an alternate route around the project. Overwidth vehicles can use KY 52 across the mountain at Tipton Ridge as a detour route.

Drivers should slow down as they approach this construction zone, watch for stopped traffic and obey the temporary traffic signals. Motorists are asked to “Drive Smart” in this and all other work zones and be aware of workers, traffic control devices and construction equipment when traveling in this and other areas where projects are ongoing.
